"And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of his Soul] himself. Indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds".(Quran 29 : 6)

Quran has not only described the human physcology (disease of heart) but also mentioned about the different kinds of soul (nafs), but God has also described the power of soul when human mind and knowledge was not matured, man couldn’t perceive most of the things. The study of human physcology started just in recent century, we all know very well how our emotions affect our health.

Let’s ponder over what Almighty God says about soul Quran mentioned three types of Soul (Nafs).

    • The Soul that Blames / Reproaching Soul (Nafs al-Lawwama)
This nafs (soul) is conscious of its own imperfections. At this level there is an inner struggle going on with the self. ‘the greater struggle being the inner battle against all the forces. This attitude of soul create balance in one’s life as he never exceeds his limits or even if he makes any mistake then immediately repent or turn to God. Whenever he try to commit any sin or wrong act, the soul begin to remind him like a good instructor. It starts to blame him leaving person uneasy or feeling guilt for what he has done.

“And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection]” (Quran 75: 2)
    • The Commanding Soul (Nafs al-Ammara)
This is the commanding soul – in fact rather than command it has allowed its impulses and desires to command it. This nafs directs its owner towards the fulfillment of desires whatever it demands. It acts in a highly selfish manner looking out for only itself. The person is controlled by this soul whatever it demand he try to fulfill its command like a slave. The person’s consience become dead and the difference between good and bad are equal for him. This is very dangerous sign when person doesn’t consider evil as an evil.

“And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Quran 12: 53)
    • The Soul at Peace (Nafs Al-Mutma’Inna)
The soul at Peace means that soul is satisfied and happy with God for whatever is destined to him. This type of soul has attained the great success by obeying the will of God, is considered a perfect level soul. This soul has attained the tranquility with his submission to God with firm faith. The soul is calm and awaits the promise of God. When the soul will receive it’s final destination i.e Paradise and God will Himself will invite them to enter in it. What a blissful day it would be! In paradise, Allah welcoming us into paradise. "...Enter it in peace. This is the day of eternal life..." (50:34) May we be amongst them.

O soul at peace, return to your Lord, well pleased & well-pleasing. Enter with My servants, enter into My Garden.” (Surah al-Fajr, 27-30)

May God Guide us to the right path of life that will lead us all to paradise.
